Empty executive office at dawn with a line of morning sun on the floor

Energy as a constraint on the P&L

After decades on the P&L I treat energy as an operating constraint, not a wellness slogan. The calendar is where it shows.

Energy is a constraint on the P&L, like cash and like decision rights. Treat it as an operating fact, not a wellness slogan.

I am not a wellness writer. I am a former multi-country CEO who also won an Irish national cycling title and competed internationally. Those two facts sit on the about page because they are the same lesson: performance is physical and mental, and you do not get to pretend otherwise for twenty-five years.

When I talk about energy with a sitting executive I am not selling sleep hygiene. I am asking whether the P&L is being run by a person who still has judgment at 6pm on a Thursday, or by a person who spent the judgment on the first three meetings. If you ignore a cash constraint, the company tells you. If you ignore an energy constraint, the company still tells you — later, and in the quality of the calls you made while tired.

Chief Executives books coaches for that conversation. It is one-to-one. It is not a training plan.

The body keeps the score the board cannot see

A chair sees the paper. They do not see that you took the hiring decision after a red-eye and a performance conversation you should have postponed. I have made that class of error. I do not romanticise it.

The discipline I keep from sport is not “grind.” It is knowing which days you can race and which days you would only crash. Executives who cannot tell the difference start to confuse stamina with quality.

This is why the calendar is the strategy. A week that stacks every hard call on the same two days is not a full week. It is a sequencing problem with a P&L attached.

Three patterns that show the constraint is already biting

All hard calls sit on Tuesday and Thursday. You are proud of the density. The quality falls after the second one. Split them. One hard call per day is not softness. It is how you keep the signature clean.

You travel and then decide. The decision was made by the flight, not by you. Decide before you fly, or wait until you can read the pack without pretending.

You dropped the thing that restores you. For me that was the bike. For you it may be a morning that is not a meeting. If it has vanished from the diary, the constraint is already writing the quarter. Put it back as work, not as a hobby you will “get to.”

The isolation of the seat makes this worse. There is no one to tell you that you are tired except the people who will pay for the tired call. That is the seat that does not share the load.

I still think on two wheels. The point is not the bike. The point is that the body is part of the job.

This is not medical advice

I will not write you a sleep protocol. I will not diagnose you. If the body needs a clinician, that is a different door. Coaching is a sounding-board hour that sometimes starts with the week, not the strategy, because the week is where the constraint shows.

A brief that says “I want more energy” is a mood. A brief I can keep is “I will not take a hiring decision after a red-eye” or “one hard call per day for the next quarter.” That standard is a brief you can actually keep.

A takeaway you can keep

Pattern Operating reading First move
All hard calls sit on the same two days You have a sequencing problem Split them; one hard call per day
You travel and then decide Fatigue is making the decision Decide before you fly, or wait
You dropped the thing that restores you The constraint is already biting Put it back on the calendar as work
You call stamina a virtue after a bad call You are confusing hours with judgment Move the next hard call

If the constraint is already visible to you and to no one else, look at who you might book. Fees and fit are agreed in writing.
